The sustainability report cover should carry an FSC label, and the paper merchant swears the stock is certified, so can you print it? Not yet. FSC works as a chain: from forest to finished piece, every custodian needs CoC (Chain of Custody) certification for the label to carry through to the product.
The classic misconception is that buying FSC paper earns the label. Certified paper plus an uncertified printer means the chain breaks at the press, and the finished piece cannot carry the label. In practice this is the gate most brands trip on, which is why the checklist asks it first.
Three labels map to three material make-ups: FSC 100% (fully certified inputs), FSC Mix (certified plus controlled inputs, the market norm) and FSC Recycled. Claims must match the label type; calling Mix '100%' is a trademark violation, not creative copywriting.
