Diecut Brief Generator

A diecut brief pins down five things: box style, contents dimensions, material and weight, quantity tier, and assembly requirements. The form builds an HTML brief locally in your browser; production die drawings are still developed from it by a structural designer.

How to Use

  1. Pick a Box style, then enter the real size in Contents L×W×H (mm)
  2. Fill in Intended material and Estimated quantity, and tick any Assembly needs
  3. Use the Notes field to flag fragility, unusual weight or how the box needs to be displayed

Method & Assumptions

'Make us a box with a premium feel.' The expensive part of structural design is not the drawing; it is redoing a design that guessed wrong. A brief tells the designer what the box holds, how it is used and what volume it runs at, so the first white sample already points the right way.

Five essentials make a brief: box style (pick from our 15-style library), contents dimensions, material and weight, quantity tier, and assembly needs such as tape-free lock, flat shipping, inserts or hang holes. In practice, settling these five settles about 80% of the structural direction; the rest is the designer's craft.

Enter the contents' actual size, and do not add your own allowance. Inner clearance (typically +2–5 mm, depending on what is packed) is the structural designer's decision, verified by physically loading the white sample. If you pad once and the designer pads again, the box ends up loose.

Why no die drawings: a production die needs caliper compensation, glue flaps, crease specifications and layout nesting, all validated on the actual board at prototyping. That is structural design work no template generator should imitate, so this tool stops, honestly, at the brief.

Quantity tier drives structural decisions. Diecutting needs a physical die — a one-time cost that amortizes well at volume — while laser cutting skips the die for runs of a few hundred at a higher unit cost. The designer recommends a process based on the tier you enter, so do not leave that field empty.

FAQ

What is a cutting die and why does a box need one?
A die is a wooden board fitted with steel cutting and creasing rules; on a diecutter it forms the box outline and folds in one pass. Making the die is a one-time charge — from a few thousand NTD upward by complexity — and reprints reuse it, which is why unit costs fall fast at volume.
I don't know which box style to pick?
Run our Box Style Advisor first to get two or three candidates, then produce one brief for each and compare quotes. Style drives material usage, assembly labor and freight, so ten extra minutes here pay back.
How many prototype rounds should I expect?
Commonly two or three: at least one unprinted white sample for fit and assembly, then one printed sample for the whole picture. The sharper the brief, the fewer rounds, and a first white sample that fits and locks is the brief doing its job.
Can one die work across different materials?
Similar weights can share a die; switching families, say folding boxboard to corrugated, usually means adjusting or remaking it because caliper and crease specs change. Considering both? Note both in the brief so the designer evaluates once.
Does this tool output the die drawing itself?
No. It outputs a brief. Production die drawings need a structural designer to work out caliper compensation, glue flaps and nesting, verified through physical prototypes, professional work the brief exists to aim correctly from version one.
Should I add buffer to the contents dimensions?
No. Enter the real size. Clearance (typically +2–5 mm) is the designer's call, tuned to what is packed and verified on the white sample. Double-padding is how boxes end up rattling.
