Effective DPI is one line of math: image pixels divided by print size in inches. A 3000 px wide image printed 10 in (25.4 cm) wide comes out to exactly 300 DPI. The tool takes cm or inches and also inverts the formula to give the largest size printable at 300 or 150 DPI.

Quality grades assume close-viewing print work: 300 DPI and up meets the commercial standard; 225–300 is acceptable in most cases; 150–225 suits posters viewed at half distance; 100–150 works for large format; below 100, pixels show up close. The 300 figure is not superstition; it roughly matches what normal eyesight can resolve at handheld distance, so detail beyond it goes unseen.

Viewing distance is the variable most people skip. Resolvable detail falls off linearly with distance, so a trade-show wall seen from 3 m at 100 DPI reads the same as a brochure at 300 DPI in hand. That is why large-format files need not be enormous; our viewing-distance calculator does the precise math.

A common trap: the DPI stored in the file lies. The '72 DPI' or '300 DPI' tag is metadata, and changing it adds no pixels. Always calculate from total pixels against the target size, which is exactly how print shops verify incoming files rather than trusting file properties.

Strictly speaking, DPI (dots per inch) describes output-device dot density, while image files are measured in PPI (pixels per inch). Everyday usage blurs the two; this tool computes effective image PPI and calls it DPI, per industry habit. Knowing the distinction saves confusion when talking specs with your printer.

When resolution falls short, go back to the source first. Asking for the vector file or the original high-res image nearly always beats resampling; if a small raster is all you have, AI upscaling is passable for photos, but text and line art should be rebuilt.

Use Cases

  • Phone photo to A4: a 4032×3024 px photo filling A4 (29.7×21 cm) lands around 345 DPI: commercial quality, straight into the layout
  • Web logo on a business card: the client sends a 600 px wide logo for a 9 cm card, which is only about 169 DPI. Ask for the vector or a high-res original instead of printing it anyway
  • Product shot in a flyer: a 2000×2000 px cutout placed at 10×10 cm runs about 508 DPI with headroom; inverted, it still holds 300 DPI up to roughly 16.9 cm square
  • AI art as an A2 poster: a 5000×7000 px generation at A2 (42×59.4 cm) comes to about 302 DPI, just over the bar; any larger drops it into the 225–300 acceptable band
  • Trade-show backdrop: plan a 3 m wide wall at 100–120 DPI, roughly 11,800–14,200 px across, so there is no need to force 300
  • A sales rep facing a blurry-print complaint reruns the original delivered image through the calculator to confirm effective DPI, establishing whether the source file or production was at fault

FAQ

What exactly is the difference between DPI and PPI?
PPI measures pixel density in an image file; DPI measures ink-dot density on an output device. What decides whether an image can print is effective PPI, but the trade has said DPI for both for decades. This tool follows that habit, and the math is the same.
Can a 72 DPI image be printed?
Yes, if it has enough pixels. The 72 DPI tag is metadata: a 3000×2000 px file labeled 72 DPI printed at 10×6.7 in is a true 300 DPI. Always calculate from pixels and target size, never from the label.
Does upscaling add resolution?
It adds pixels, not detail. Resampling interpolates what is already there, and classic interpolation just softens the image. AI upscalers do reasonably well on photographic content, but for text and line art, go back for the vector or the original high-res file.
How many pixels does a photo need for A4?
About 3508×2480 px for 300 DPI at full A4 (29.7×21 cm), roughly 8.7 megapixels. Almost any recent phone camera clears that; the trouble usually comes from heavy cropping or messaging apps compressing the file in transit.
Do business cards really need 300 DPI, or is 250 enough?
300 is the safe commercial standard, and 225–300 is hard to tell apart by eye in most cases. A card is held at reading distance, so take 300 when you can get it; at around 250 DPI, avoid fine dark lines and small type and it usually passes.
Why don't posters and large format need 300 DPI?
Because nobody reads them nose-to-print. Resolvable detail drops with distance: 150 DPI at 1 m or 100 DPI at 3 m looks the same as 300 DPI in hand. Forcing 300 bloats the file for a gain no one can see.

Limitations & Disclaimer

  • Grades assume conventional halftone printing and normal vision; giclée and special screen rulings need their own assessment
  • Bleed is not included in the math: add it (typically 3 mm per side) before checking final artwork
  • Vector artwork (AI/SVG/PDF vector elements) has no resolution and does not apply here
  • Final quality also depends on source sharpness, compression and press conditions, so proof critical jobs
