How to Handle Pantone 4655 C in Print

Pantone 4655 C can be converted to CMYK for printing, but the values automatically generated by software should not be treated as a final-color guarantee. A Pantone spot color is a printing method that uses a single premixed ink to reproduce a specified hue. It is commonly used for brand colors, packaging key visuals, and projects that require high consistency. The point is to control the hue with the same ink, rather than relying on CMYK 4-color halftone dots to approximate the effect

CMYK is 4-color halftone printing using Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black. It is suitable for photos, illustrations, and general commercial print pieces. Its advantage is cost flexibility; its limitation is that some Pantone colors can look muddy, gray, too red, or too yellow after conversion

Warm brown, beige coffee, and leather-like colors such as Pantone 4655 C are most vulnerable to two problems: they look warm and refined on screen but turn gray-brown on paper; they look clean in the design file but become one shade darker on press because of paper absorption

On press, I usually do not start by asking, “Do we need to run a spot color?” I first ask whether this color is allowed to be wrong

・If Pantone 4655 C is the primary brand color, packaging background color, or main visual for a membership card, I recommend estimating the cost of a spot color first

・If Pantone 4655 C is only used as a poster background, a small catalog block, or an extension asset for social media, a CMYK approximation is usually acceptable

・If the same batch of materials includes business cards, stickers, paper bags, and outer boxes across 4 different substrates, CMYK alone can easily make every item look related, but not like they belong to the same family

If the print shop does not have ready-made Pantone 4655 C ink, that does not mean it cannot be printed. The correct approach is to ask the vendor to use the Pantone formula, mix the ink on site, or have an ink manufacturer prepare it, then confirm it with a physical swatch and proof, rather than letting the press operator pick a coffee color by eye from a screen

The C in Pantone 4655 C stands for Coated, meaning the visual standard is based on coated paper. When the same color number is moved to an Uncoated paper surface, brightness, saturation, and the color after drying all change. This is also where disputes most often begin when newer color numbers are sent to print for the first time

Print shops commonly handle this in 3 ways

・Mix the spot color on site: suitable for brand colors, packaging colors, and items that will be reprinted over time. This usually requires one additional printing unit. If a 4-color press is already running CMYK, adding Pantone 4655 C requires a 5th color unit or a separate pass

・Have the ink manufacturer premix it: suitable for large-volume projects or jobs that require stable reprints. Managing the same ink across 2 print runs is more stable than mixing it on the spot each time

・Simulate it with CMYK: suitable for short runs, limited budgets, and DM pieces, catalogs, or labels with higher tolerance for color variation. You must first accept that “similar” is not “the same color”

I remind designers of one very practical point: when a print shop says “we can print it,” that only means it is technically possible. It does not mean the finished product will match the Pantone 4655 C on your screen

To avoid disputes, write these 4 things clearly before submitting the job

・Color number: Pantone 4655 C. Do not write only 4655 or coffee beige

・Version: specify the Coated paper appearance. If the actual substrate is uncoated, proofing must be done separately

・Printing method: CMYK simulation or spot color. Do not leave the decision to the print shop

・Acceptance standard: use a physical Pantone swatch, digital proof, or press proof as the basis. A screenshot cannot be used as the acceptance standard

Whether Pantone 4655 C is worth running as a spot color depends on how much commercial responsibility it carries. The cost of a spot color comes from ink mixing, press washup, color changes, test-print waste, and the need for an additional color unit. These are the situations where I would recommend paying for a spot color

・Brand identity: for restaurant brands, luxury packaging, and corporate standard colors, if Pantone 4655 C turns even slightly gray, the perceived quality can become cheap

・Large background areas: when used full-bleed on outer boxes, paper bags, or book covers, CMYK overprinted dots can easily show muddiness or uneven color fields

・Long-term reprints: for packaging materials reordered every quarter or every year, a spot color makes it easier for the 1st batch and the 3rd batch to look like the same set

・Multiple suppliers: when boxes, stickers, and hang tags are produced by different vendors, a spot-color standard is more reliable than verbally saying “close to coffee color”

These are situations where I usually would not rush to ask the client to spend more

・One-time event DM: if it is printed only in 1 batch and has a short lifespan, CMYK proofing and confirmation are enough

・Small accent areas: if Pantone 4655 C appears only in 5mm lines, icons, or footers, the value of a spot color is limited

・Layouts that already include photos: photos are already built from CMYK. If a small color block next to them is matched to Pantone precision, most readers will not notice

・The budget is consumed by paper: if you switch to a highly absorbent art paper, paper proofing is more practical than forcing a spot color

Marketing teams often underestimate the value of color stability. Especially when packaging is placed on shelves, if just one box in the same row has Pantone 4655 C shifting red, the whole row can look like different production batches

In the design file, Pantone 4655 C should be set as a Spot Color with the correct color name preserved. If you decide to convert it to CMYK, note “CMYK simulation of Pantone 4655 C” in both the file and the print order to prevent prepress staff from accidentally separating or automatically converting the spot color

In Adobe Illustrator or InDesign, the most common mistake is not choosing the wrong color, but having 2 very similar swatches in the same file, such as Pantone 4655 C, Pantone 4655 C copy, and a manually entered CMYK coffee color

Before submitting files, I run this checklist

・Keep only 1 Pantone 4655 C swatch in the swatches panel, and delete duplicate or unused swatches

・When a spot color is required, set the swatch type to Spot Color, not Process Color

・When CMYK is required, convert the swatch to Process Color and ask the print shop to fine-tune it based on the proof. Do not mix the two workflows

・When transparency, shadows, or overprint effects are used, check the separation preview before exporting the PDF to confirm Pantone 4655 C has not disappeared

・For text smaller than 8pt, avoid using dark coffee small type built from multiple colors, as registration error can make the edges look blurry

If the team often works with newer Pantone color numbers, I recommend creating a “brand print color card.” Record 5 things for each color number: Pantone name, CMYK approximation, paper substrate, printing method, and most recent proofing date

・Next, look at the substrate: the same color printed on coated paper, woodfree paper, and cotton paper may look more different than expected

・Finally, look ahead to reprints: if this is long-term packaging material, keep 1 signed proof and compare the next reprint against the physical sample, not an image on screen

Some clients say “it is only off by a little” the first time they review a proof. But when 1,000 outer boxes are stacked in the warehouse, that little difference becomes the character of the entire batch
