This is one of the complaints I see most often on the print production floor. Over the past few years, I have reviewed many failed print files for designers. The worst disasters usually happen around "transparency."

Many designers are used to hitting Save as PDF at final output and sending the file straight to print. When the artwork has layers with Drop Shadow or Multiply, thin white lines start showing up along the printed edges

In the print world, these are called stitching lines. The root cause is that older PDF formats do not understand transparency

When you save to a PDF version that does not support transparency, Illustrator is forced to perform transparency flattening

The system chops vector objects with transparency and the background image into countless raster fragments and pieces them back together. If the RIP, or Raster Image Processor, is even slightly off in its calculation, the seams show

So when a printer asks for a PDF file, it has never meant that any random PDF export will do

When a Printer Asks for PDF/X, What Is the Difference Between X-1a and X-4?

PDF/X is an international standard made specifically for print exchange. It removes interactive elements that do not belong in print, such as video and audio

The two standards most often seen on production floors are PDF/X-1a and PDF/X-4. Their technical logic is completely different

・PDF/X-1a: An older standard released in 2001. It is very conservative, forces all color into CMYK, and does not support transparency at all

・PDF/X-4: A newer standard released in 2008. Its core upgrade is support for Live Transparency and color management

From years of working with both production teams and clients, I see X-1a as safe for RIP systems from twenty years ago, but unfriendly to modern design files that may carry a dozen or more effects layers

X-4 preserves the integrity of transparent objects and lets the RIP on the printing side calculate them at output time

The file size is smaller, and edges keep their vector smoothness. This is the cleanest way to solve transparency breakage

How to Choose the Right PDF Spec Based on the Printing Equipment

If X-4 is this good, why do some printers still reject files and ask for X-1a instead? It depends on how old their in-house machines are

To make sure the artwork outputs accurately, I recommend using the MINDS Printing three-gate prepress check for final files

・Gate 1, confirm the equipment: If you are working with a mid- to high-end fully custom commercial printer such as MINDS Printing, the newer digital presses or modern CTP systems in the shop can parse X-4 cleanly. If it is an old press or a gang-run printer that cannot communicate clearly, switching back to X-1a is a defensive move

・Gate 2, flatten manually: If you are forced to use X-1a, do not let the export system cut everything automatically. In Illustrator, select all objects with transparency and run "Object > Rasterize" with the resolution set to 300 ppi. Turn uncontrolled cutting into a controlled raster image

・Gate 3, overprint preview: This is a must in my file checks. After exporting the PDF, open it in Acrobat Pro and turn on Overprint Preview. If there are no white lines on screen, they will not print

Once you build this logic into your final-art SOP, you save a lot of repeated back-and-forth and the cost of reprints
