There is no absolute right or wrong between these two modes; in practice, I usually suggest choosing based on the phase of the project

What should you do when your project maintains a large number of image links, yet you must hand the file over to someone else?

This is when you should call upon Illustrator's built-in ultimate remedy: the "Package" function

Package: Illustrator's built-in file consolidation mechanism. The system automatically creates a new folder and copies the current AI file, all linked image files, and fonts into it. It is the most standard and secure method for cross-computer handovers and sending files to print shops

Through the menu File > Package, the software will help you gather the image files scattered across your hard drive

・First Gate: Confirm that the finished size, bleed area, and trim marks are set correctly

・Second Gate: Open the Links panel to confirm no broken links, and outline all text (or confirm the fonts allow packaging)
