What’s the Difference Between FSC Mix and FSC Credit?
Simply put, FSC 100% means every fiber in this paper stock comes from FSC-certified forests. It is fully traceable across the chain. FSC Mix means some fibers come from FSC forests, while others come from controlled sources or recycled materials. It can carry the FSC label, but it belongs to a mixed system. FSC Credit means the amount of certified paper stock used in the market is converted into environmental contribution credits that can be claimed externally. The paper stock itself may not be certified
For most Taiwanese brands, the labels they actually deal with most often are Mix and 100%. Credit has lower practical visibility in Asian markets. Choosing the wrong one creates two layers of risk. First, FSC may determine that trademark use is non-compliant and require the item to be taken down. Second, the ESG report or external messaging may be challenged as greenwashing, which weakens the brand’s sustainability investment instead. In the cases MINDS Printing (MS, a mid-to-high-end fully custom commercial printing provider) has helped clients handle, the most common mistake is this: the brand bought Mix paper, then used 100% language in public claims
Next, we will break down the three certificate types, then look at how brands should choose

How Do the Three FSC Certificate Types Actually Work?
The FSC certificate system has several layers. Clear up a few key terms first, or procurement meetings quickly turn into people talking past one another
・FSC 100%: all wood fibers in the product come from FSC-certified forests. The required share is strictly 100%, with no mixing or controlled sources accepted
・FSC Mix: some fibers in the product come from FSC-certified forests, while some come from controlled sources or recycled materials. CoC (Chain of Custody) verification confirms that the mixed ratio meets the rules
・FSC Credit: similar to the idea of carbon credits. A company buys credits from certified forestry to support sustainable forestry, but the paper stock it actually uses may not be certified
A few details are often mixed up:
・FM (Forest Management) certification: this certificate is for forest managers. It proves that a forest area is managed in a sustainable way. It is separate from product-side 100%, Mix, or Credit, but raw materials for 100% must come from forests with FM certification
・CoC Chain of Custody: this verification applies to the processing and trading chain. It makes sure every step can be traced, from forest to paper mill to print shop. Without CoC, even if a paper mill buys certified pulp, it still cannot claim that the product is FSC
・Controlled Wood: this is not certified forest, but it must meet the five risk assessments set by FSC, including legal harvesting and whether high conservation value forests are involved. The non-FSC portion in Mix paper stock falls into this category
The logic of this system is simple: FM at the forest end, CoC at the processing end, and the product label. All three layers are needed. Brands often assume that getting FSC paper from a paper mill means they have the right to use the FSC label. In reality, the print shop also needs CoC verification. Otherwise, the whole print run cannot carry the FSC mark

What Label-Use Situations Do Taiwanese Brands Commonly Face?
Based on the client cases I have handled over the past few years, Taiwanese brands usually encounter FSC labels in three types of situations. Each one has different expectations for certificate level
Packaging and printed materials exported to the EU or North America
The EU’s anti-deforestation law, EUDR, took effect in 2023. Although it mainly regulates agricultural and forestry products such as beef, coffee, and cocoa, supply chain due diligence requirements for packaging materials will only get stricter. For brands shipping to Europe, being asked by retailers or buyers to provide FSC certificates is normal. In this situation, Mix is usually enough, as long as the print shop’s CoC verification is still valid and invoices and delivery notes can be traced
ESG reports or sustainability communication materials
Annual reports, sustainability reports, and external communication pieces such as brand story brochures. If these documents need to carry an FSC label on the front or back cover, procurement and design need to confirm one thing: whether the paper stock used for the printed piece really has FSC certification, and whether the certificate number can be found in the official FSC database at info.fsc.org. Choosing 100% or Mix depends on how strong the brand wants the external message to be
Channel procurement rules or customer contract requirements
Retail channels and international brand customer contracts often state that packaging materials must meet FSC Mix or an equivalent standard. In these cases, Mix is the benchmark cited most often. If the contract says only FSC-certified paper stock without naming a level, both sides need to clarify before signing whether that means 100%, Mix, or Credit, so shipments are not rejected later
One reminder here: FSC Credit has lower visibility in the Taiwanese market. In practice, Asian printing businesses mostly encounter Mix and 100%. If your supplier suddenly pitches that they have Credit available for purchase, ask clearly how the Credit amount is calculated and what external claims it can support. The communication rules for Credit are different from Mix and 100%, and mixing them up is risky
How Should Brand Procurement Decide: Is Mix Enough, or Is 100% Required?
There is no single standard answer, but the decision logic is clear. From a production consultant’s experience, I would suggest that brands ask themselves three questions before choosing a certificate level
First question: how strong is the external commitment behind this printed piece?
If it is an annual report cover, ESG communication brochure, or a piece where the brand wants to publicly declare that it uses 100% sustainable forestry materials, go with 100%. The value of these documents lies in the strength of the message. If Mix is used, people may ask why the brand did not choose the highest level. If it is product packaging, an event booklet, or a shipping carton, where function matters more than messaging, Mix is usually enough
Second question: has the channel or customer specified a level?
If the contract clearly requires FSC Mix certification, follow the contract. Do not raise costs by upgrading to 100% on your own. If the contract only says FSC certification without specifying a level, confirm with the other party proactively and record the reason behind the choice. If it is checked later, you will have a basis
Third question: is the print shop’s CoC status and certificate validity clean?
This is where projects most often go wrong in practice. Certified paper stock does not mean the print shop can put the label on your piece. The print shop must have valid CoC verification, and the verification scope must cover the processing method you requested, such as offset printing, digital printing, or finishing. If the print shop’s CoC has expired or the scope does not match, the printed item cannot carry the label, even if the paper stock really is FSC
When the MINDS Knowledge Academy consulting team helps clients make procurement decisions, we often use this decision frame:
・Use 100% for: annual brand sustainability report covers, limited-edition commemorative items, and communication pieces with a strong public-commitment purpose
・Use Mix for: product packaging, internal corporate publications, event booklets, and channel contracts that require FSC but do not specify a level
・Use Credit for: companies that want to support sustainable forestry by buying FSC credits, but do not plan to place the label on products, such as for internal ESG calculations

How Do You Avoid Greenwashing? Three Practical Checks
Greenwashing risk is not always intentional. More often, it comes from not knowing the rules. From production-line cases I have seen, the most common greenwashing situations fall into three types, each with a matching way to check it
Logo-use rules are not aligned with the latest official FSC version
FSC trademark rules (FSC-STD-50-001) are updated from time to time, including the minimum size of the logo, color rules, and placement rules when shown beside other marks. If a designer is using a layout from three years ago, the printed result may already be non-compliant. How to check: get the latest logo files from the FSC trademark download page, and confirm that the version you are using is still valid
Claim wording goes beyond the actual certificate level
This is the most common mistake. A brand buys Mix paper, then writes “we use 100% FSC-certified paper stock” in a press release or social post. That becomes a greenwashing claim. How to check: compare every sentence used in external claims against the certificate type and level actually purchased. If it does not match, change it immediately
No third-party verification mechanism
FSC itself has an independent assurance body, ASI, for audits. But if the brand has not built an internal verification process, relying only on the print shop saying “we have CoC” is not enough. How to check: ask the print shop for a copy of its CoC certificate and its validity dates. When needed, verify the certificate number, authenticity, and applicable scope in the FSC public database
These three checks can be applied to any FSC-related procurement case. The root of greenwashing risk is never the certificate itself. It is the gap between communication and actual action

Key Takeaways
・FSC 100% is full-chain traceability, Mix is a mixed system, and Credit is a credit concept. The three cannot be used interchangeably
・Taiwanese brands most often deal with Mix and 100%. Credit has lower practical visibility in Asian markets
・Buying FSC paper does not mean you can print the label yourself. The print shop’s CoC verification is required
・The root of greenwashing is the gap between communication and actual action, not the certificate itself
・Every external claim must be checked against the certificate type and level actually purchased
Further Thoughts
From the perspective of a printing industry consultant, choosing an FSC certificate is essentially a tug-of-war between the strength of a brand’s external commitment and its cost structure. Mix already meets most channel contract requirements and general ESG communication needs. Putting the entire budget into 100% is not always the best answer. The real place to invest is the internal verification process: build a checklist that runs from procurement, contracts, and print submission to external copy, making sure the wording and actual action match at every step
For design teams, do not start layout the moment FSC paper stock is confirmed. First check the print shop’s CoC status, the certificate level, and the paper stock’s certificate number. Once all three are complete, then build the layout. That prevents finishing the print run only to discover that the label cannot be used
For corporate procurement teams, adding FSC rules to standard contract terms and requiring suppliers to attach a certificate copy and traceability number with every shipment is the lowest-cost form of risk control
For teams that want to use AI or digital tools to improve efficiency, consider turning FSC certificate management, label version updates, and external-claim review into internal standard operating templates to reduce human error. When the MINDS Knowledge Academy consulting team helps clients put this in place, we integrate these SOPs into the pre-check stage of the print submission process

FAQ
- How would you explain the difference between FSC Mix and FSC 100% in one sentence?
- 100% means full-chain traceability, with all fibers coming from FSC-certified forests. Mix is a mixed system, with some fibers from FSC forests and some from controlled sources. Both can use the FSC label, but the strength of the message is different
- What is FSC Credit? How is it different from Mix?
- Credit means buying environmental credits from certified forestry, similar to the concept of carbon credits. The paper stock actually used may not be certified. Mix means the product itself contains a certain share of certified fibers
- Can a print shop without CoC verification print the FSC label?
- No. CoC is Chain of Custody verification. Without CoC, even if the paper stock itself is certified, the printed piece cannot legally carry the FSC label
- Can we buy Mix paper stock and publicly claim 100%?
- No. That creates a greenwashing claim. External wording must match the certificate type and level actually purchased, or FSC may determine it to be non-compliant
- How can Taiwanese brands verify that an FSC certificate is real?
- Go to the official FSC public database at info.fsc.org and enter the certificate number. You can check the certificate status, applicable scope, and validity dates
