Many designers and buyers have lived through this painful scenario: after spending hundreds of thousands on a batch of rigid boxes with large black or deep-blue areas, the boxes look beautiful fresh off the press, but after folding, box gluing, logistics sorting, and delivery, the surface is already covered with white scratch marks and greasy fingerprints by the time the customer receives it

Lamination is the process of heat-pressing a layer of BOPP or PET film onto the surface of printed matter to provide water resistance, stain resistance, and adjusted reflectivity. It is a key process that determines both protection and tactile feel

So if the print is already laminated, why does it still get scratched? The real issue is the type of film being used

Dark printing is not actually more fragile; the contrast is simply much higher

The surface of standard matte film has a fine, low-gloss texture. When it rubs against a hard object or is lightly scraped by a fingernail, the surface microstructure becomes flattened or damaged, creating reflected light

On a white background, that reflection is almost invisible. But on a dark base color, it turns into a glaring white mark

Standard matte film also tends to absorb oils easily. Sweat from a packaging line worker’s hands or fingerprints from a consumer can instantly leave patchy marks across a dark box surface. If your project is for a premium electronics product or a department-store skincare brand, that dirty appearance can seriously reduce perceived product value

To solve the scratch problem, we usually have two practical options. Their principles and costs are completely different:

・Standard matte film: This is the cost baseline. It has a smooth hand feel and slightly dulls the printed color. Its weakness is that it offers almost no scratch resistance, making large dark areas extremely prone to fingerprints and abrasion marks

・Anti-scratch matte film: The cost is about 1.5 to 2 times that of standard matte film. Its surface undergoes special hardening treatment, giving it very strong scratch resistance. It can effectively withstand friction during finishing and transportation, and it does not pick up fingerprints easily. This is the practical first choice, especially for 3C product boxes

・Velvet film (soft-touch film): The cost is more than 3 times that of standard matte film. Its surface has a delicate, dampened feel similar to short velvet or peach skin, making it feel very premium. While it does not pick up fingerprints easily, it is less resistant to scratches from sharp objects than anti-scratch matte film, so it is more often used for high-end cosmetics or limited-edition gift boxes

From what I have observed on production lines over the past few years, clients often get stuck wanting the feel of velvet film while only having the budget for standard matte film. That is when rational purchasing judgment becomes essential

・First, check budget and positioning: If the product has a high retail price, targets a luxury customer segment, and has sufficient packaging budget, go straight to velvet film to maximize the tactile unboxing experience. If the budget is limited but scratches are unacceptable, anti-scratch matte film is the safest high-value option

・Second, check the artwork and finishing: Matte film materials all absorb color, making dark colors appear deeper and slightly duller. If your job also includes foil stamping or spot gloss finishing, the surface tension of velvet film may not work well with certain foil stamping films, making adhesion less reliable. Anti-scratch matte film generally offers much better compatibility with post-press finishing

・Third, check logistics and display conditions: If the product will go through multiple transfers or even open-shelf retail display in a hypermarket, where different people pick it up every day, choose anti-scratch matte film decisively. Velvet film is better suited to products that sit quietly at a department-store counter and are handled gently by staff
