Do AI-Generated Images Really Fade After Printing?
Yes, but the problem is not the AI image itself. It is how the image, once turned into an ink layer, handles light, water, heat, friction, and cleaning
Colorfastness: the ability of a printed piece to keep its original color after light exposure, rubbing, washing, or cleaning. On the production floor, this is usually split into light resistance, abrasion resistance, wash resistance, and weather resistance. The key is knowing which type of stress the finished product will face
ISO 105-B02 is often used for lightfastness evaluation, while ISO 12040 is used to observe lightfastness changes in printed matter and ink under filtered xenon arc light. I treat these standards as a shared language, but I do not treat the standard name as a free pass
If an AI-generated image is only used for an indoor poster, color shift and resolution usually become problems before fading does. Take the same image and use it as a promotional decal outside south-facing glass, and UV, rain, heat, and cleaning frequency need to be discussed first

How Do Paper and Ink Affect Fading Speed?
When I look at paper, I start with 3 things: surface coating, ink absorption speed, and whether lamination is needed
・Gloss coated paper or synthetic material: the ink layer mostly stays on the surface, color saturation is high, and it works well for a photographic look and highly saturated AI images. But reflection, scratching, and lamination compatibility need to be confirmed first
・Matte paper or uncoated paper: it absorbs more ink and diffuses more light. Blacks sink, reds become duller, and it suits a softer texture. For outdoor sun exposure, you cannot rely on the paper itself to carry the load
・Specialty materials: gold and silver card stock, pearlescent paper, textured paper, PET, and PVC can change the white point and adhesion. Gradients, skin tones, and large dark areas in AI images are where problems show up fastest
Ink has to be reviewed together with the material. dye-based ink gives bright color but is weaker under lightfastness demands, while pigment, UV, solvent, and latex are more common for outdoor large-format prints, vehicle decals, and weather-resistant output
Laundry care labels cannot be handled with ordinary paper thinking. Washing, detergent, drying, and friction are one combined stress set. When the material is wrong, the issue is not only faded color. Small text can blur, and barcodes may become unreadable
How Can AI Predict Colorfastness Risk?
AI is useful for prepress screening. Quality assurance still has to return to materials, process, and testing
I break the “MINDS Printing (MS) three checkpoints before print” into 3 checkpoints:
・① Use case checkpoint: separate indoor displays, outdoor signs, vehicle decals, and laundry care labels first. At minimum, mark 4 types of stress: light, water, friction, and heat
・② Material checkpoint: write the paper white point, coating, ink absorption, and ink type into the specification. Bright red, fluorescent green, and large black areas in AI-generated images should be flagged separately
・③ Protection checkpoint: list gloss coating, matte coating, PP lamination, anti-UV film, and abrasion-resistant film as comparable options first. Do not wait until the finished product fades before going back to fix it
For AI accuracy, I set the scope at “risk ranking,” not “guaranteed number of days before fading.” It can sort options into low, medium, and high risk, but without formal material samples, it cannot replace ISO testing or real exposure on site
Brand primary colors need extra caution. Red, orange, and purple are the 3 color groups that often reveal problems first under sun exposure, ink absorption, and gamut conversion. AI can flag the risk, but before final approval, you still need to see the physical sample
When Is Field Testing Required?
If it will be exposed to sun, washed, rubbed, or covered by a warranty in the contract, field testing is required
・Outdoor signs: the same image placed on south-facing, north-facing, and west-sun walls may fade at different speeds. Test samples should use the final ink, final substrate, and final protective layer
・Vehicle decals: bending, car wash chemicals, high-pressure water jets, and film stretching all affect the ink layer. A common approach is to output a small sample first, laminate it with the same film, then run rubbing and cleaning tests
・Laundry care labels: washing, detergent, drying, and friction have to be reviewed together. Small text, QR codes, and barcodes expose material issues earlier than large images
For cost decisions, I usually use 2 levels: at the proposal stage, make a color-feel sample with a similar paper. Before mass production, make 1 proof with the final material. For durability-sensitive jobs, do not skip the latter. The money saved there is often paid back double when complaints come in
