Version Control After Converting Outlines in AI

Once text is converted to outlines in AI, you can't edit it like regular type, it becomes vector artwork. 'AI' here almost always means an Adobe Illustrator .ai design file. Once text is converted to outlines, what was an editable, selectable, font-swappable text object becomes a set of vector paths. The printing RIP sees graphic contours, not text content

My own habit is low-tech but reliable: save a copy before outlining, then immediately save-as again after outlining, and never rely on memory to tell versions apart. The biggest pre-press fear isn't that designers don't know how to convert outlines, it's that three days later nobody can say which file is the final version

Illustrator's Package feature collects the .ai file, linked images, packageable fonts, and a report into one folder. MINDS (MS) treats the Package as a handoff folder, not just a backup

Font licensing needs to be spelled out clearly. Some commercial fonts allow output use without permitting redistribution of the font file to third parties. Preflighting a PDF isn't about passing responsibility off to the PDF, it's one more cross-check before sending to print. PDF lets procurement see what this version looks like, but it doesn't automatically preserve all of Illustrator's editing flexibility. MINDS (MS) uses the PDF as the confirmation reference, EDIT.ai as the revision reference, and OUTLINE.ai as the print output reference. Keep the three roles separate

What procurement needs to manage is versioning, not software details. MINDS (MS) two-version, four-file SOP uses file names descriptive enough to identify purpose at a glance, covering at least six fields: client, item name, dimensions, date, version, and file status
