Method & Assumptions
Whether a packaging job needs a dedicated spot ink for the brand color is often the longest argument in the costing meeting. It stays unresolved mostly for lack of a quantitative starting point: how far does this color actually sit from the process-print gamut?
Analysis starts by converting the input to CIELAB (sRGB D65 → XYZ → Lab) for a device-independent position, then computes a CMYK mathematical approximation. Lab doubles as the shared language for multi-vendor work; write it into the spec sheet and every printer measures against the same numbers.
Process-reproduction risk is a heuristic estimate: the input is compared against a chroma ceiling that roughly approximates a typical coated-stock process gamut by hue and lightness. Chroma beyond the ceiling is clamped, and the ΔE00 between the original and the clamped color is the reported gap. To be plain: this is not an ICC gamut measurement, and the number is directional, not predictive.
Risk grading uses three bands: ΔE00 below 2 is low risk, process printing gets close; 2–5 is medium, a trained eye will see it, so proof critical brand colors; above 5 is high, worth evaluating spot-color printing or defining a print-adapted version of the brand color.
Saturated teals, oranges, violets and neon-like colors fall outside the process gamut most often, which is exactly why spot inks exist: pre-mixed physical ink lays down colors four-color halftones cannot build. Metallic and fluorescent effects go further still, needing spot inks or finishing such as foil stamping or spot varnish.
The tool ships no color-book database; if you hold a PMS number, take its Lab or sRGB value from an official swatch book or licensed software first. One more practical constraint: gang-run printing normally runs CMYK only, so a spot ink means a dedicated press run with a different cost structure. That alone makes the risk grade worth checking before quoting.

- Before CI sign-off: the brand consultant runs all six palette colors, two land in the high-risk band (ΔE00 above 5), and a spot-color budget goes into the rollout plan early
- Packaging background call: the large solid on the outer box grades high risk, so it moves to a spot ink, avoiding batch-wide casts and lot-to-lot drift
- Multi-vendor matching: the primary color's Lab values go into the spec sheet and contract annex, giving three contract manufacturers one shared acceptance basis
- Adapted color strategy: the brand orange grades medium risk (ΔE00 2–5), so the designer preps the original and an adjusted version, and the brand decides after proofing
- Before a gang-run job: business cards will print CMYK-only on a gang run, so the brand green's process gap is analyzed first, to choose between accepting the approximation and moving to a dedicated run with a spot ink
- After a packaging return, the brand reruns the original brand color through the risk grade to see whether the gamut itself, not a mis-mixed ink, caused the dispute
FAQ
- Why can't I just type a PMS number here?
- PMS numbers and their color values are Pantone LLC's proprietary database, and no complete table is legally free to redistribute. Rather than ship dubious data, we stay honest: take the value from an official swatch book or licensed software, then analyze the print gap here.
- Does a brand color always need spot printing?
- No. If the ΔE risk is low, or your uses are mostly digital output and short runs, process printing is fine. Large solids, metallics, high-chroma colors and strict matching requirements are what justify spot-color cost. Check the risk grade first, then decide whether to spend.
- What ΔE counts as close enough?
- There is no universal number: commercial work often accepts ΔE00 2–3.5, strict brand matching may demand below 2, and large packaging solids are more sensitive still. Agree the acceptance number with your printer on physical proofs, not after the run.
- Can gang-run printing use spot colors?
- Normally no. A gang run places many clients' jobs on one shared set of CMYK plates to split costs, so the inks stay process-only. A spot ink needs a dedicated run, with plate and wash-up costs carried by one client. If the brand color must be spot, settle the run type at quoting.
- If two colors match on screen, will they match in print?
- No. A screen is an emissive RGB device and paper carries reflective ink; gamut and viewing conditions differ, and an uncalibrated display skews things further. Digital comparison is reference only; real matching relies on physical swatches, proofs and an agreed viewing light.
- Why can't CMYK simulate metallic or fluorescent colors?
- Metallics rely on aluminum-flake reflection and fluorescents on emitted light, both beyond what reflective process inks can do physically; no halftone build gets there. These effects require spot inks or finishing such as foil stamping or spot varnish.
