How to Choose the Print Material for Member Cards? Don't Let Barcode Reflections Ruin Your Design

How do you choose member card materials? The most accurate criterion is the customer's usage frequency and scenario. When I evaluate this type of print job at MINDS, I usually use the 'MINDS Three-Gate Verification for Card Issuance' to help clients organize their specifications:

・① Determine the substrate by business type: Choose plastic or paper based on card-swiping frequency

・② Keep identification codes away from reflective areas: Ensure scanning devices can read barcodes properly

Let's first look at the substrate choice in the first gate. If it's for a gym where members swipe their cards daily, or a SPA that often gets wet, a standard PVC plastic card with a thickness of 0.76mm is definitely the top choice. Its physical strength is identical to a credit card, so it won't deform even when squeezed inside a wallet

Conversely, if you are in the apparel retail industry or a street-side cafe where customers might only pull out their cards to collect points once a month, choosing an art card of 300g or heavier with a layer of matte or glossy lamination is more than enough. Many designers initially want to use very thin paper cards to save budget, but once the edges of the paper card fray and get damaged in a customer's wallet, the brand image takes a hit as well. Based on my long-term observations on the production line and customer side, choosing the right material from the start will save stores a lot of trouble with card replacements later on

This is the most common complaint from stores and the easiest pitfall for designers. Moving on to the second gate of the MINDS Three-Gate Verification, we must resolve the issue of scanning failures. Unscannable barcodes are usually not because the printing press didn't print them dark enough, but because the wrong finishing was chosen. Many cards use overall glossy lamination to chase a shiny effect, but infrared or laser scanners hit the glossy surface and create severe glare, making it impossible for the machine to read the black-and-white spacing of the barcode

To avoid this pitfall, if the entire card must be glossy, it is best to apply a spot matte finish to the barcode area, or directly fix it using a matte sticker with black text on a white background. Furthermore, never place QR codes near the edges of the card. That area is a high-contact zone prone to being held by fingers and fading due to friction; if even a small corner is damaged, the entire card becomes useless

Sequential Number: Unique non-repeating numbers printed card-by-card, acting as the key identifier linking physical cards with the membership system. They are often produced via inkjet printing or hot-stamping embossing. When designing, make sure the font is clear and wear-resistant

Entering the third gate of the MINDS Three-Gate Verification, we need to inspect the compatibility between post-processing and equipment. Registered membership cards typically include a signature panel, which is a special ink-absorbing coating. During design layout, this must never be placed too close to the embossed sequential number, otherwise, when a pen glides over the uneven surface, the ink will surely skip or smudge

Another detail is the treatment of corners. Standard plastic cards usually feature rounded corners with a radius of about 3.18mm. This is not just for aesthetics; sharp square corners can easily scratch the interior lining of a wallet when cards are inserted or removed. If paper cards are not rounded, their corners will quickly get battered. Sometimes in high-end VIP card projects, clients request foil stamping or holographic anti-counterfeiting labels. The foil-stamped area must never overlap with magnetic stripes or barcode scanning paths. Extending from physical membership cards to digital SaaS systems, the two are actually complementary. Physical cards handle the first-hand tactile experience and brand ritual, while backend systems handle points and behavior tracking. When planning card issuance in the future, designers and system vendors should initiate dialogue earlier to integrate barcode specifications, reader models, and card layouts together. This prevents the awkward situation where a card looks gorgeous but cannot be scanned at stores
