Fujifilm's Plate Business Changes Hands: A Supply Chain Warning for Asia-Pacific Prepress

This transfer covers the production and sale of offset plates in certain regions. Graphic Communications, Fujifilm's commercial printing and graphic solutions business, will continue directing resources toward digital presses and related services

On September 16, 2026, Print21 reported that the global plate-business arrangement covers Australia and New Zealand but excludes Japan and North America. The buyer is Huangshan Jinruitai Technology Co., a Chinese plate manufacturer and a long-standing Fujifilm partner

The transaction value has not been disclosed. The scope includes production, sales, related business functions, and licenses to use the product brands and certain intellectual property and patents. Ownership of the plate business is expected to transfer by the end of 2026, with sales and related functions handed over in the first half of 2027

I would not read this as an announcement that supplies will run out tomorrow. I would, however, put it into Asia-Pacific prepress supplier-change management, because delivery windows, technical support, and responsibility for customer complaints may all be reassigned

A change of plate ownership affects CTP because making plates is not finished by simply changing the supplier's name. Plate sensitivity, exposure parameters, development conditions, and on-press calibration all have to be assessed together

CTP (Computer to Plate) is the prepress process of writing digital artwork directly onto a printing plate, skipping film-based platemaking. If the plate and equipment conditions are not properly matched, dot reproduction, registration, and on-press stability can drift outside the original process window

The most troublesome situation on the shop floor is often not a whole batch of plates becoming unusable. It is gradations, fine lines, or registration slowly drifting out of spec, only to be discovered after the print run has already gone out the door. A logo on the carton cannot prove that the finished product is stable

Print21 describes the industry structure as Fujifilm, Agfa, and Kodak each holding roughly one-third of the global offset-plate market. When any one of them adjusts regional supply, procurement teams should reconfirm the replacement material and who owns validation

Jinruitai currently operates four plate-production lines at two locations in China. That manufacturing scale cannot replace a print shop's own testing on its CTP system, processor line, and actual paper stocks in Taiwan or elsewhere in Asia-Pacific

A Fujifilm Business Innovation spokesperson for Australia and New Zealand said that no major impact is currently expected. That is a supply update for the present stage, not a long-term commitment covering every market

・Supply responsibility: Confirm which company takes the order, where inventory is held, lead times, batch traceability, and replacement materials if supplies run short

・Technical responsibility: Confirm who handles exposure settings, process adjustments, complaint assessments, and on-site support

・Pricing structure: Do not compare the per-box price alone. Changes in brand licensing, transport, services, and inventory responsibility may all show up in quotes and contract terms

Put the responsibilities in the purchase order first

Small and midsize print shops should now manage plates as process assets. First map current materials and replacement routes, then validate them on the actual equipment in small batches. Do not wait until inventory is nearly gone to switch materials

Print21 reported on September 16, 2026, that Fujifilm is planning a partial spin-off of its Business Innovation division, worth about ¥1,175bn (approximately US$10bn). Viewed within this reshuffling of resources, the plate transfer makes the direction clearer than a single product discontinuation would

This plate transfer does not mean offset will disappear overnight. The report also notes that although the number of offset printing companies worldwide has fallen in recent years, plate sales have remained relatively stable on short-run offset work once newspaper plates are excluded

If SaaS only records that a file upload succeeded, it will quickly lose traceability when a supplier changes hands. At a minimum, it should retain the plate brand and batch, CTP conditions, approved proof, replacement material, and incident reports

AI-generated images and automated imposition can shorten prepress work, but they cannot validate plates for the print shop. That boundary needs to be written into the workflow at the product-design stage
