How much kgCO₂e and how many kilograms of paper a lighter stock, smaller format, shorter run or different stock would save, all recomputed from the same factor table

Print Carbon Reduction Calculator

Fill in a baseline (stock factor, grammage, size, sheet count) and one or more alternatives, and the tool recomputes each from the same MOENV factor table, listing kgCO₂e saved, the percentage against baseline and the paper avoided. It uses no unsourced rules of thumb such as recycled stock saving X%; every figure traces back to the spec you entered and the factor you chose. The biggest saving is listed first, and if an alternative emits more the tool says it is not a reduction. Like the estimator it covers materials only, and figures must not be used for carbon fee filing or carbon label applications.

How to Use

  1. Under Baseline, fill Finished size, Paper weight (gsm) and Sheets, then pick a factor via the lookup
  2. Under Alternative, fill only what changes: Alternative gsm, Alternative size or Alternative sheets
  3. If the stock itself changes too, open Alternative stock factor (optional) and pick another one
  4. Read each result card for its Saves figure in kgCO2e and the percent vs baseline; red text means it emits more

Method & Assumptions

Factor source and conversion method are identical to the print carbon footprint estimator: the MOENV CFP_P_02 static file, mass-based factors only, paper mass × factor per kg.

Each alternative is the baseline recomputed with one or more specs swapped; the saving is baseline emissions minus alternative emissions. Lighter stock, smaller size and shorter run all use the same factor; only a change of stock needs a different factor.

No percentage rules of thumb are built in. A figure such as recycled stock saving X% has no place in the tool without a source; to compare stocks, pick two factors and let the numbers speak.

Results are sorted by saving, largest first. An alternative that emits more than the baseline is flagged as not a reduction rather than being buried by the sort.

Paper saved is listed separately, because purchasing and warehousing think in kilograms rather than kgCO₂e.

Use Cases

  • Baseline 5,000 A4 sheets at 200 gsm, alternative at 157 gsm: 21.5% less carbon and 21.5% less paper, identical because the factor is unchanged.
  • Same baseline switched to A5: half the area, so both emissions and paper drop 50%.
  • Run cut from 5,000 to 4,000: 20% less, the most overlooked yet most certain reduction.
  • Baseline on woodfree at 1.46, alternative on kraft at 1.22: 16.4% less, entirely from the difference between the two factors.
  • Enter all three at once and the tool sorts by saving so you see the most effective option first.
  • When sales and purchasing disagree on whether to cut grammage, they enter each proposed option at once and let the same ranked list settle the discussion instead of guesswork

FAQ

Why is there no preset for how much recycled stock saves?
Because that percentage has no source. The tool's rule is that every figure must trace back to the spec you entered and the factor you chose. To compare recycled stock, look up its factor and compare directly.
Does a lighter stock always cut carbon?
On the materials side, yes, because there is less paper. It may also affect stiffness and print quality, which is a separate question this tool does not judge.
What if the alternative emits more than the baseline?
The tool flags it as not a reduction and shows the extra kgCO₂e, rather than hiding it in the sort order.
Can these savings go into an ESG report?
As a relative comparison, yes, noting that they are materials-only estimates from MOENV secondary factors excluding process and transport. Absolute figures should come from a full LCA.
How does this differ from the estimator?
Same factor table, same arithmetic. The estimator gives one option's absolute figure; this one gives the difference between options.
Can I claim carbon neutrality from this?
No. A reduction is not neutrality, and the tool computes no offsets. Carbon neutral, zero carbon and fully sustainable claims are an active greenwashing enforcement target in the EU.
