# Packaging Material Comparator

No packaging material is greenest in the absolute, so compare 2–3 side by side on recyclability, protection, print quality and weight instead. This tool publishes no carbon numbers: responsible carbon data takes an LCA of your actual supply chain, and generic averages mislead.

## Method & Assumptions

The frame is six material families against four dimensions: recyclability, protection, print quality and weight (a direct freight driver), each shown as a three-step tier so the trade-offs stay visible.

Recyclability is scored on practice, not theory. The rating follows what Taiwan's current recovery system actually processes; technically recyclable but rarely recovered earns no credit. Composites are the killer. Mono-material designs, all paper or all PET, always beat films and laminates at end of life.

Weight gets its own axis for a business reason. It drives freight directly, and using less material often out-greens switching materials, because lightweighting cuts transport straight away. Before changing families, check how much the current structure can shed.

Carbon numbers are deliberately absent. A material's real footprint depends on origin, process energy, transport distance and end-of-life route, and the same material can vary severalfold across supply chains. Publishing averages without your data manufactures greenwashing risk; for real numbers, commission an LCA of your own chain.

Print quality follows the surface. Coated boxboard takes fine detail and saturated color; corrugated and kraft print muted and suit a rustic register; molded pulp's surface resists fine printing, so in practice labels or debossing carry the branding.

Tiers are a reading aid, not measurements. Confirm final material choices with your printer and suppliers, and check food-contact or dangerous-goods rules separately.

Carbon intensity row (added 2026-08): each material maps to exactly one named factor in Taiwan MOENV's CFP_P_02 product carbon footprint dataset, showing kgCO₂e per kg of material and the announcement year, taking the newest year where names repeat. Materials with no factor (currently rigid board and molded pulp) show no factor rather than a substitute. These are secondary-data, materials-only intensities for relative comparison only.

## Use Cases

- A D2C brand shipping 3,000 orders a month picks its shipper: corrugated versus rigid board across protection, freight and recyclability. Corrugated usually wins the daily run, with rigid held for keepsake editions.
- An insert swap: EPE foam against molded pulp, weighing how much recyclability rises and how much cushioning gives.
- A visibility call: a full-PET clear box against a windowed carton, which at bottom is a mono-material versus composite question.
- A lightweighting pass: same corrugated structure, compare on the weight axis first and confirm how much material can come out before debating a family switch.
- ESG deck material: use the four-dimension table to explain the choice, and commission an LCA for any section that needs quantified numbers.
- A buyer preps for supplier negotiations by shortlisting candidate materials across the recyclability, protection and weight tiers, arriving with a list instead of empty-handed

## FAQ

### Which packaging material is greenest?

There is no absolute answer; it is a function of your supply chain, channel and local recovery system. Three general rules hold: mono-material beats composite, light beats heavy, and practical recyclability beats theoretical. Everything else comes back to your context.

### Other sites publish carbon numbers. Why not here?

Because generic figures are mostly literature averages that can differ severalfold from your actual sourcing, and quoting them manufactures greenwashing risk. We state the unknown honestly and point to how to actually know: an LCA of your own supply chain.

### Does FSC certification make a material greener?

FSC verifies forest management at the source; it does not change a material's recyclability or strength. It strengthens sourcing legitimacy and the sustainability story, a different question from whether the material recycles well. Cover both, and let neither stand in for the other.

### Is plastic always worse than paper?

Not necessarily. Light, thin, mono-material PET can beat heavy paperboard in some transport scenarios; paper's edge lies in mature recovery systems and consumer perception. The honest answer is context, not the label on the material.

### Does a recycling symbol mean the package gets recycled?

Not by itself. The symbol names the material class; actual recovery depends on what the local system accepts and whether the package is a composite. A film-windowed paper box can carry a paper symbol and still be landfilled whole at the sorting line.

### Can molded pulp replace every plastic insert?

Not all of them. Pulp cushions and locates parts well, and being mono-material it recycles cleanly, but it cannot match plastic molding for precision or thin walls, and its surface resists fine printing. Fit depends on the product's tolerances and visual demands, and a prototype settles it.
