# Print Carbon Footprint Estimator

> Enter stock, weight, size and sheet count to estimate materials-only kgCO₂e from Taiwan MOENV public factors, with what is left out spelled out

A print job's materials-side carbon footprint is total paper mass multiplied by the carbon footprint factor for that stock. The tool uses Taiwan MOENV's product carbon footprint factors (1,164 records, commercially usable under the government open data licence): it works out paper mass from grammage, sheet area and sheet count, then multiplies by a factor you select yourself from the table. Three things up front: this is a materials-only estimate with no process, transport, end-of-life or biogenic carbon; where no factor exists the tool says so rather than substituting a similar material; and the estimate must not be used for carbon fee filing or carbon label applications, because these are secondary-data factors and the authority states supplier primary data takes precedence. Taiwan's carbon fee applies to operations above 25,000 tonnes a year, which does not include the typical print buyer.

## How to Use

1. Fill in Finished size, Paper weight (gsm) and Sheets, or pick Custom to enter width and height

## Method & Assumptions

Factors come from Taiwan MOENV's open data platform, dataset CFP_P_02 (product carbon footprint emission factors), retrieved once into a static file with the retrieval date and record count. Nothing is called at runtime. The licence is the government open data licence: commercial use allowed, attribution required, shown verbatim below the tool.

The factor table has no material category field and no system boundary field, so the tool does not infer on your behalf. Lookup is a plain name-contains match returning every hit; you choose one by name and announcement year, and the name, factor, unit and year are shown unmodified.

Only mass-based factors (kg or tonne) are used. The declared unit is free text, and the tool requires the Chinese label and the bracketed abbreviation to agree on the same multiplier before accepting it. Factors per piece, per sheet or per square metre are hidden, because multiplying paper mass by them yields a number that looks plausible and is simply wrong.

Paper mass = grammage × sheet area (m²) × sheets ÷ 1000; materials-side emissions = mass × factor per kg. Tonne-based factors are converted to per-kg first.

Materials only. Process, transport, end-of-life and biogenic carbon are excluded, not as a conservative choice but because the factor table contains none of that data, and filling it in would be invention.

Where no factor exists the tool says so and suggests asking the mill for primary data. It does not interpolate or substitute a similar material.

Everything runs in your browser; your inputs are never sent to a server.

## Use Cases

- 5,000 A4 sheets of 157 gsm woodfree: about 49 kg of paper, times the factor for woodfree paper at 1.46 kgCO₂e/kg (2018) gives roughly 71.5 kgCO₂e, or about 14 g per sheet.
- The same run priced against the kraft factor of 1.22 comes to about 59.7 kgCO₂e. The gap comes from the factor, not the weight.
- Search for coated art paper: not in the table at present, so the tool says no factor found and suggests asking the mill, rather than borrowing another board's factor.
- Search for corrugated: three factors appear (B, A and AB flute) with different values and years. Which one applies is your call; the tool does not pick.
- When pasting the result into a customer's supplier questionnaire, include the factor name and announcement year so they know it is a secondary-data, materials-only estimate.
- Before a rep answers a client's carbon question, they run the materials-only figure and note in the reply that process and transport are excluded, so it is not mistaken for a full footprint

## FAQ

### Can I use this figure for carbon fee filing or a carbon label application?

No. These are secondary-data factors and the authority states supplier primary data takes precedence. The tool is for early-stage assessment and education; formal use needs a full life-cycle assessment.

### Why are process and transport excluded?

Because the factor table only holds materials-side product carbon footprint factors, with no process or transport data. Adding a rule of thumb such as printing adds X% would be invention. For a complete figure, run an LCA on your actual supply chain.

### What if my stock is not in the table?

The tool says no factor found and does not substitute a similar material. Ask the mill for primary data on that stock, or try another keyword.

### Several factors match my stock. Which one do I pick?

The table does contain same-name entries from different years, and similar materials in different grades. The tool lists name, factor, unit and year for each so you can choose; a newer announcement year and a closer grade description are usually the better fit, but the choice is yours.

### Why can't factors per piece or per square metre be used?

Because multiplying paper mass by them yields a number that looks plausible and is simply wrong. Only mass-based factors are used, and the tool tells you how many non-mass ones it hid.

### Do I owe Taiwan's carbon fee?

Usually not. It applies to operations emitting over 25,000 tonnes a year, which does not include the typical print buyer. This tool exists to answer the numbers your brand customers ask for in supply chain disclosures, not to compute a fee.
